General Clark Addresses Texas crowd; Calls For An Independent Investigation into Administration Leak

General Clark took his campaign to the heart of Bush country today, and received a big Texas welcome. Over 400 people, of all ages and from all walks of life, turned out to hear General Clark's remarks and cheer on his candidacy.

Rep. Richard Raymond (D-Laredo) introduced General Clark to the crowd of enthusiastic supporters, chanting "We want Wes." During his remarks, General Clark criticized the Bush administration for its alleged leaking of the identity of a CIA agent. General Clark said that the leak was "wrong, shady and cheap," and called for an independent investigation into the leak. General Clark said that an independent body is necessary because the issue is too important for political gamesmanship or to be managed by the John Ashcroft Justice Department. General Clark urged the administration not to play politics with the investigation.

General Clark also challenged Bush on his economic policy and his decision to go to war against Iraq. General Clark said that Bush has taken the United States into an "unnecessary war in Iraq in which we've lost hundreds of people. We don't need to be there."

The crowd was very excited about the General's candidacy. Many held signs which read "Don't Mess With Wes." At one point, one woman yelled "Give 'em hell, Wes." General Clark responded, "We're going to give them the truth and they will think it's hell."
