Date: January 20, 2004 Wesley K. Clark Excerpt Of State Of The Union Evening Remarks
George W. Bush has made promise after promise to America. In 2001, he moved into the White House promising to make our country stronger. Promising to leave no child behind. Promising to make compassion the core of his Administration. But for three long years, he's broken these promises, one after another after another. For three long years, he hasn't stood up for America's families and American values. And our country deserves better. He promised to create jobs. Instead, he lost 3 million. He promised to fix health care. Instead, four million more Americans are uninsured. He promised to be fiscally responsible. Instead, he's turned record surpluses into record deficits. He promised to run an open government. Instead, he's sealed off records, held secret meetings, and run the White House behind closed doors. He promised us a humble foreign policy. Instead, he's alienated our allies, lost the respect of the world community, and cost 500 brave young men and women their lives. Tonight, in his State of the Union, our president is once again going to promise us the world. But it's all just smoke and mirrors designed to hide the stark fact that he has no real plan for our future. It's nothing but special effects designed to hide the sad truth that for three long years, George W. Bush has helped those who have most, hurt those who have least, and ignored everyone in between. Tonight, more than eight million Americans are out of work. But President Bush will pledge to spend trillions to privatize Social Security and make his tax cuts for the very rich permanent, locking in an unfair advantage for those who need it least. He'll spend billions on the war in Iraq, missile defense, and sending a man to Mars. But he's going to spend a grand total of $120 millionfor job training. That's just $15 for each unemployed American. That's not much more than the cost of bus fare to the training center, lunch, and coffee. Tonight, 44 million Americans still don't have health care. But President Bush won't do nearly enough to make health care truly affordable. He won't do nearly enough to make health care truly accessible. Tonight, millions of Americans are scraping to make ends meet - to pay their bills, put food on the table, get clothes for the kids. But President Bush will propose a savings plan that's a giveaway for the wealthiest Americans, but doesn't do enough for those who are struggling to save for the future. And tonight, we have the largest budget deficit in American history. But President Bush will continue the leadership deficit in the White House, keeping our country on the same reckless path to record debt. Tonight, George W. Bush is going to talk about his vision for an "ownership society." Well, I think that's a pretty good description of the America he wants. An America where the very few own most of the wealth. An America where the special interests own the White House. AnAmerica where this country acts like it owns the world. The sad fact is that today, two years after he coined the term, we've got a new axis of evil. It's one our President has created. It's an axis of fiscal policies that threaten our future...foreign policies that threaten our security...and domestic policies that put families dead last. So this election, the stakes for America's families - for America's future - couldn't be higher. And we simply cannot afford to roll the dice. We need a new approach. One that puts principle above politics and tackles the tough issues that hold this country back. We need to build on the values the people believe in: patriotism, faith, family, and inclusion. |
